BACKGROUND

DILOCS started out in the industry as small supplier of fresh produce to Uganda’s major chain stores, Restaurants and Hotels.

We supplied supermarket chains such as Biashara Super Market in Mbarara, Quick save, Capital Shoppers, and Lake View Hotel, Regent hotel with a large percent of their fresh produce requirements on a national scale. Based in Kampala, the company was well placed to source and supply for this market and therefore able to develop a huge producer base to fulfill its Supply chain programs.

Exports were a natural extension of the service we offered our producers. We wanted those producers offering a superior quality product to benefit from the prices they could receive from international markets. So using the knowledge and experience we had acquired with national supermarket programs, we began trading their fruit internationally under the Export promotion of Organic Fruits and Vegetables from Africa (EPOPA) and Uganda Export Promotions Board.

We had begun to prepare for the export of Fresh fruit and Vegetables over a year prior to their deregulation. When these lines were deregulated, the company was one of the strongest privately owned contenders in the industry. We had already established a large client base through the export of non-regulated lines and were supplying the leading importers in over seven countries.

Since then DDSL have built up a formidable team. The client and producer base of each company was largely complimentary in nature, increasing the combined market range enormously. Together the two companies service most of the overseas supermarkets with incredible support from our producers.

DDSL is very involved in agricultural development and besides assisting and supporting "emerging" growers and community farms, by providing seeds to our producers and giving buying from them on a better price compared to others local buyers, we are farming ourselves on nearly 20 hectares of which we are planning to extend our production through irrigation, to make it one of the largest private farming operations in Uganda. The company is also involved in and committed to numerous joint-ventures with existing growers and also has large pack-houses in selected production areas.

So from humble beginnings in 2008, employing a few people, the Group has created many new jobs and an opportunity, trained and assisted numerous people and has today a highly efficient team in excess of 9 direct employees, and builds a network of over 400 Farmers across the country.

Most importantly, everyone in the Group is passionate about the business and looks forward to the challenges ahead.

We have just recently opened up a Zambia office to cater for the Southern Africa Market, of which we are duplicating similar activities like those being carried out as above.

During the season, our technical consultants visit producers' farms, providing personal attention and first hand information.

In addition to providing guidance to farmers, our technical consultants also oversee operations at the pack houses. They ensure the fruit is being cooled and kept at the right temperature as well as packed in the correct packaging.

Once the product has passed our stringent quality controls, our logistics personnel will then see that it reaches its destination in the shortest possible time. This increases the shelf life and ensures that the product arrives in the condition our clients have learnt to expect from us.
